At the request of the Air Force Institute of Technology, 3 axis immersion scanner was developed that allows for testing using the transmission and echo techniques. The maximum dimensions of the elements that can be tested are 600x250x100 mm. The ultrasonic part of the system consists of normal probes with a frequency of 5 MHz, a multi-channel flaw detector and a computer control and archiving program. The mechanical system allows for parallel movement of the probes in three dimensions. The tests are performed automatically, the results can be controlled on the computer screen in the form of A-scans and a collective graphic summary. The entire testing process is recorded. This allows for complex analysis of the results – creating various types of cross-sections and determining the surface and location of detected defects. The system can work using the transmission technique or the echo technique for both probes. The system is mainly used for testing composite elements.
